Many film directors have tried to capture the essence of sex, lust, and passion on film. Sadly, only a few have been able to pull off this difficult task. This top 10 list will list the 10 sexiest movies ever made. Make sure to draw the curtains while enjoying these films.
10. Unfaithful (2002)
Richard Gere became the king of the romantic comedy genre when he starred in 1990’s ‘Pretty Woman’. The film, a story about a blossoming love between a man and a prostitute, captured the hearts and minds of women everywhere, and Gere quickly became the vision of the ‘ideal man’ to women all over the world. In 2002, Gere starred alongside Diane Lane and Olivier Martinez in ‘Unfaithful’, a film that completely changed his image. While Pretty Woman was light in tone and easy to watch, Unfaithful was hot, sweaty, and sexy. Gere was transformed into a sex idol overnight. To this day, Unfaithful is still one of the sexiest movies ever made. Its sex scenes, directed by Adrian Lyne, are just as arousing today as they were in 2002.
9. The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)
Jack Nicholson is one of the most notorious womanisers in Hollywood. According to Nicholson himself, he’s slept with over 2,500 women. In 1981’s ‘The Postman Always Rings Twice’, Nicholson got the chance to show his sexier side off to the world for the very first time. Starring alongside Jessica Lange and John Colicos, the film saw Nicholson playing ‘Frank Chambers’, a drifter who starts an affair with a married woman. An adaptation of the novel of the same name, the film featured a number of steamy and sexy scenes between Nicholson and Lange. Director Bob Rafelson perfectly understood the source material, and it showed on screen. The film went on to be a huge success worldwide. Many claim it to be one of Nicholson’s best performances.
8. Basic Instinct (1992)
1992’s ‘Basic Instinct’ transformed Sharon Stone’s career and turned her into a star. The film saw Stone playing Catherine Tramell, a seductive woman implicated in the murder of a rich and powerful businessman. Michael Douglas starred alongside her as a police detective trying to track down the businessman’s murderer. Basic Instinct featured some of the hottest sex scenes ever filmed. Douglas and Stone had incredible onscreen chemistry with tons of sexual tension. Basic Instinct also became famous for its iconic interrogation scene. In it, Stone flashes the camera for a few moments, briefly showing her vagina to the world. Basic Instinct is still regarded as one of the sexiest movies ever made. While the film has had a few sequels over the years, none have been able to capture the magic of the original, sadly.
7. The Dreamers (2003)
Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci has never been one to shy from controversy. His earlier works (in particular ‘Last Tango in Paris’ which is featured later in this list) featured some of the most graphic sex scenes ever put to film, and ‘The Dreamers’, which Bertolucci directed in 2003, is no different. Starring a pre-Boardwalk Empire ‘Michael Pitt’ and a pre-Casino Royale ‘Eva Green’, The Dreamers told the story of a French brother and sister trapped in a steamy love triangle with a young American foreign exchange student. One of Bertolucci’s friends famously called The Dreamers ‘viagra on film’, and he wasn’t wrong. Few films are sexier than The Dreamers.
6. Y Tu Mamá También (2001)
Before Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron struck it big with ‘Gravity’, ‘Children of Men’, and ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’, he wrote and directed ‘Y Tu Mamá También’, a low budget Mexican indie film. The film starred Mexican actors Gael García Bernal, Maribel Verdú, and Daniel Giménez Cacho as a trio on a road trip around Mexico. During the trip, the trio find themselves getting better acquainted, with threesomes, orgies, and more taking place on the road. Y Tu Mamá También is still regarded as one of Cuaron’s finest works and one of the best Mexican films ever made.
5. Secretary (2002)
Before Maggie Gyllenhaal played the beautiful ‘Rachel Dawes’ in ‘The Dark Knight’ and the loveable ‘Ana Pascal’ in ‘Stranger Than Fiction’, she played the sexy ‘Lee Holloway’ in ‘Secretary’, a film about a sadomasochistic love affair between a lawyer and his secretary. Directed by Steven Shainberg, ‘Secretary’ featured graphic sex scenes with BDSM, domination, and other fetishes on show. Secretary has become a cult film over the years, with many seeking it out for its taboo nature and open attitude towards BDSM and other fetishes.
4. 9 1/2 Weeks (1987)
Before director Adrian Lyne filmed ‘Unfaithful’ in 2002, he filmed a number of other films featuring graphic sex scenes, including ‘9 1/2 weeks’ which starred Mickey Rourke and Kim Basinger as a man and woman embarking on a steamy affair. 9 1/2 Weeks featured some of the most graphic sex scenes ever filmed. One scene featuring Rourke and Basinger enjoying blindfolds and ice cubes was particularly arousing and it elicited a great deal of outrage from the American press.
3. Bound (1996)
Before the Wachowski brothers gained fame and notoriety for the Matrix trilogy, the two brothers released ‘Bound’, a film about a pair of women exploring their sexuality.
The film starred Gina Gershon and Jennifer Tilly as Corky and Violet, a lesbian couple looking to steal money from the mob.
Bound’s girl-on-girl sex scenes were titillating and exciting to watch. Gershon and Tilly’s onscreen chemistry was perfect and their scenes together were incredible. Rumours say that the Wachowskis are currently preparing a sequel. Hopefully these rumours will pan out.
2. Body Heat (1981)
Lawrence Kasden’s career was at an all time high in the early 80s. After writing the screenplays for ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ and ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, he was riding high on a wave of geek credibility. Kasden didn’t want to be pigeonholed to a single genre, however. He wanted to branch out and spread his wings. 1981’s ‘Body Heat’, written and directed by Kasden, was wildly different to his previous work. The film was racy, with superbly shot sex scenes that perfectly captured the passion between the film’s two leads. It was received warmly by critics and audiences on release, and many consider it to be Kasden’s finest work.
1. Last Tango in Paris (1972)
‘Last Tango in Paris’, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci and starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider, was famously called “the most powerfully erotic movie ever made” by film critic Pauline Kael, and she wasn’t wrong. The film starred Brando as an American hotelier who falls in love with a young Parisian woman called Jeanne. Over the course of the film, the passion between the two grows stronger, resulting in some of the steamiest sex scenes ever filmed. Last Tango in Paris was received warmly by critics who called it one of the greatest films ever made. Film censors disagreed, however. The film was, unfortunately, censored in many countries on release, with unrated cuts being released years later. Today, Last Tango in Paris is considered the sexiest film ever made. Not even Bertolucci’s later efforts have been able to best the film. With few challengers on the horizon, it’s likely that Last Tango in Paris will hold its ‘sexiest film of all time’ title for many more years to come.
